The Final Battle: How to Move a Fridge Without Damaging Your New Floors

You’ve just finished installing a beautiful new timber floor. It looks perfect. But now comes the final, high-stakes challenge: moving the refrigerator back into place. At Town & Country Timber Flooring, we’ve seen it all too often—a stunning new floor that has lost a fight with a heavy appliance. Trust us, the fridge always wins. But moving a fridge doesn't have to be a disaster for your timber. You don’t need fancy equipment to do it like a pro; you just need a plan.

Here is our step-by-step guide to moving your fridge without leaving a single scratch or dent.

The Toolkit

Before you start, gather these items:

  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Two sheets of plywood (masonite also works well)
  • A tape measure
  • A spirit level
  • A friend to give you a hand (never do this alone!)
A fun illustrated checklist of items needed for moving a fridge on a timber floor displayed on a hardwood timber background, including a vacuum cleaner, sheets of plywood underlay, a tape measure, and a spirit level, with a handwritten sticky note listing everything you need to prepare for successfully moving a fridge.

Step 1: Measure and Empty

Before you move a centimeter, take your measurements: height, width, and depth. Keep these handy to ensure the fridge will clear every hallway and doorway on its path.

Next, empty the fridge. Not only does this significantly reduce the weight, but it’s also the perfect time to finally toss that mystery container from the back of the shelf!

Step 2: The "Red Carpet" Clean

Think of your floor like a red carpet. The area needs to be cleaned thoroughly and free from all dirt and grit. Even the smallest piece of debris trapped under a wheel can act like sandpaper, leaving a permanent mark on your new finish.

Step 3: Why Plastic Wheels Aren't Enough

A common mistake is thinking that modern fridges with plastic wheels are safe to roll directly on the floor. Even if they are rolling well, the concentrated weight of a heavy fridge on those small contact points can cause "tracking" (dents) or fine scratches.
The Secret: Always use your plywood sheets.

Step 4: The Plywood Shuffle

  1. The First Sheet: Lift or tilt the fridge slightly (never drag it!) and slide the first sheet of plywood underneath. Always have your helper steadying the fridge while you do this.
  2. The Flap: Before laying any sheet down, give it a quick "flap" or shake. This blows off any dust or grit that might have been missed.
  3. The Glide: Roll the fridge slowly to the edge of the first sheet.
  4. The Second Sheet: Place your second sheet of plywood directly in front of the first. Once the fridge is on the second sheet, move the first sheet to the front and repeat the process.

By leapfrogging the sheets along your path, you create a continuous "armoured" track that protects your timber from scratches and pressure dents.

Step 5: The Finishing Touches

Once the fridge is in its final home, reconnect the power and water. Use your spirit level to ensure the fridge is sitting perfectly even—this helps the doors seal correctly and keeps the motor running efficiently.
